“Red-tail Tinfoil Barb” Local Name: "Red-tail Carp" or "Lum Pum"
or "Lian Fai", in Southern language, which is the same as
Schwanenfeld's Barb.
History :
Red-tail Tinfoil Barb is in the family of ‘Cyprinidae’. It is
similar to B. schwanenfeldi in appearance and is in the same
family. Red-tail Tinfoil Barb has been believed to be the
auspicious kind of fish from past to present. It has also been a
mythical fish mentioned in Thai literature since ancient times,
for instance, it was referred to in a Thai royal poetry called
‘Boat Parade Poem’ or ‘กาพย์แห่เรือ’ in the chapter ‘Fish
Watching Procession’ written by Chao Fha Tibet Chaiyachet
Suriyawong or Chao Fha Kung, the great poet in the late Krungsri
Ayutthaya period. - "ตะเพียนทองงามดั่งทอง
ไม่เหมือนน้องห่มตาดพราย" (Red-tail Tinfoil Barb is beautiful
like gold, unlike you who wears a spirit brocade) – Besides,
Red-tail Tinfoil Barb is a model for weaving in palm leaves.
General characteristics :
Red-tail Tinfoil Barb has golden glittering mixed with red or
orange scales on its bodies. Its tails are orange or scarlet.
Red-tail Tinfoil Barb’s scales are bigger than Schwanenfeld's
Barb and its dorsal fins and tails do not consist of black
stripes. The size of mature Red-tail Tinfoil Barb is around up
to 30 centimeters. It is a kind of fishes which most people feed
as ornamental fishes. Importantly, its name is identical to the
name of Ang Thong Province (The word “Thong”).
Habitat :
Red-tail Tinfoil Barb is famously known among Thai people. Their
original habitat is in territorial fresh waters. They are
abundant in the areas of Ang Thong Province, in Chao Phraya
River and Noi River and especially in every fish area in front
of temples inside Ang Thong Province.
